HSH Director of Group Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Janice Lao

Receives Eco-Business A-List 2019 and Women in Sustainability Leadership Award

HONG KONG, 20 December 2019 - On behalf of the management of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, we are proud to announce that Janice Lao, Director of Group Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, has been selected for the inaugural Eco-Business A-List 2019, and awarded one of Green Building & Design (gb&d)’s Women in Sustainability Leadership Awards (WSLA), in recognition of her dedication and continued efforts in sustainability.

Ms Lao is one of the first cohorts of the Eco-Business A-List, screened and selected by a team of journalists and advisory board members from Eco-Business, the region’s leading media organisation on sustainable development. The A-List recognises the skills, effort and tenacity of people driving sustainability within corporations here and, more importantly, the impact they have created.

Ms Lao has also been awarded one of Green Building & Design (gb&d)’s Women in Sustainability Leadership Awards (WSLA). gb&d, a magazine for sustainability professionals, set up the awards “to create a global hub that identifies and connects the most powerful women at the forefront of sustainability. WSLA looks to recognize and advance these top-level female sustainability executives who can then, in turn, support younger women with dreams of reaching such levels of success.”

“We are delighted that our colleague Janice Lao has been recognised by two leading sustainability organisations,” said HSH Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr Clement Kwok. “At HSH, we are deeply committed to creating social, economic and environmental benefits for the local communities and the wider societies in which we operate. Janice coordinates this effort across many teams and operations in our group. We are pleased that her passion, hard work and dedication to global sustainability issues have been recognised and appreciated.”

“I am humbled and honoured to have received the two recognitions by Eco-Business and Green Building & Design respectively. I would like to share the honour with my colleagues, whom I am very grateful to their support and efforts in carrying out various sustainability initiatives with me over the years. Sustainability and corporate responsibility is always a team effort and I am hopeful that we can continue raising awareness and implementing effective solutions to sustainability challenges, particularly in the area of Sustainable Luxury,” said Ms Lao.

Ms. Janice Lao holds a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford.  Prior to joining HSH in 2016, she worked in The Philippines and the USA before coming to Hong Kong in 2005 to work with Environmental Resources Management.  In 2007, Janice relocated to London to work with Carbon Capital Markets, before returning to Hong Kong in 2008 to take up the position of Environmental Manager, Cathay Pacific Airways.  Janice was given a part-time secondment from 2010 to 2014 as Group Sustainable Business Manager with John Swire and Sons (HK) and she held that role concurrently with her Cathay Pacific responsibilities.  In 2014, Janice joined MTR Corporation as Senior Manager – Sustainability before moving to HSH in 2016.
