EarthCheck Certification

Since 2012, our hotels have participated in the EarthCheck Certification programme. The EarthCheck Standard, is designed by experts in the field and backed by science. For the first time this year, The Peninsula Hotels achieved group certification for all 10 of our existing hotels, each achieving recognition of their robust environmental management process and commitment to
continuous operational improvements on sustainability.

Sustainable Building Design

We are proud to lead the hotel industry by committing to meeting international sustainable building standards within new hotel construction and renovation projects. Our design teams and procurement partners also adhere to sustainable criteria when selecting interior furnishing for our guestrooms, public areas, restaurants and lounges.

Bathroom Amenities

The Peninsula’s bathroom amenities contain no harmful chemicals or additives, demonstrating that luxury products can be crafted with care and consideration for our guests and our planet. Along with recyclable aluminium packaging, they are also 99.9% free of single-use petroleum plastics. Additionally, amenities such as shower caps, toothbrushes, and razors - which formerly incorporated petroleum plastics - have been replaced with alternatives made from corn starch, wheat, wood and recycled metals.

Resource Efficiency

Scarce resources, such as energy and water, are essential to ensuring our guests enjoy the highest standards of luxury and comfort. Our teams are constantly seeking the most energy-efficient solutions to operate each hotel more sustainably. Resource efficient hardware such as water-efficient showerheads and rainwater collection systems can amount to significant impact.

The Peninsula Academy

The Peninsula Academy programme brings each exciting destination to life for our guests, enabling them to discover their chosen city through the eyes of a local. Curated environmental and heritage-themed activities immerse guests in the unique diversity and culture of the cities we are proud to call home.

Waste Recycling

Our hotel teams work with an array of community and environmentally focused organisations to effectively manage waste at each hotel. Current initiatives range from waste recycling (inclusive of amenity bottles) and food donation projects to soap and bedsheet upcycling. In 2021, we started to collect discarded shells from our restaurants to rebuild Hong Kong’s oyster reefs, which protect underwater flora and fauna, stabilise the ocean floor, reduce erosion and absorb tidal energy which would otherwise contribute to changing our shorelines.

Removing Single-Use Plastics

The continued use of single-use plastics is a pressing matter requiring stern collaborative action. HSH is currently on the journey of removing all single-use plastics from our hotels, and we were one of the first international hospitality groups to announce such a comprehensive initiative.

Responsible Sourcing

While our guests expect the finer things in life at our hotels, they also care that the products they enjoy are ethically and sustainably sourced. More than 70% of tea, coffee and chocolate served is responsibly sourced, and the majority of the paper and cleaning products we use are sustainable.
